Undergraduate Research
The Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences strongly encourages the participation of undergraduates in a research experience. These experiences may be undertaken AT ANY STAGE in the curriculum by students on any major or minor degree track (BS/BA in Earth & Planetary Science, BS Environmental Sciences, minors as well). Below are the basic requirements and other pertinent information.
Often this activity coincides with an Honors Thesis (see Departmental Honors; if you are unsure as to how the GPA restrictions affect your participation, meet with the Departmental Honors Advisor; download Honors guidelines here; download application for the Departmental Honors Program here).
Students are also encouraged to apply for the Leonard Research Fellowship - a research scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students to apply for each semester. The application can be downloaded on the EPS scholarships page: EPS undergraduate scholarships.
If you are interested in doing research in a specific subject area, reach out to the relevant faculty member to ask if they have a research opportunity available.
For further information, please contact the departmental Honors Advisor (Professor Cori Myers, Rm. 226, Northrop Hall, cmyers@unm.edu) or your favorite professor.
