The Silver Family Geology Museum
The Silver Family Geology Museum was established in the 1930's by Stuart Northrop (after whom our building is named) and provides public exhibits of mineral, fossil, and rock specimens. The material on display represents a small portion of the geological collections of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences.
Did you know that some mountains are continuing to grow?
Geologists study such phenomenon and examine the materials and structure that comprise rock and the forces and processes acting upon them, such as why are mountains continuing to grow. Students can tour UNM’s Silver Family Geology Museum which displays mineral, fossil, and rock specimens. This collection includes nearly 20,000 catalogued specimens that are utilized in research, teaching, and as reference materials.
