The Transmission Electron Microscopy Laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility that is part of the Electron Microbeam Analysis Facility in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and Institute of Meteoritics, University of New Mexico. The facility is housed in Northrop Hall, Earth and Planetary Sciences on the Main UNM Campus. The laboratory is a key component of the university wide, nanoanalysis capabilities supported by the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering, and the Office of the Vice-President for Research through the Center for Microengineered Materials (CMEM) http://cmem.unm.edu/. The laboratory provides powerful techniques for characterization of the internal structure and chemical composition of materials through electron imaging, electron diffraction, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and electron energy loss spectroscopy at the near atomic level. In addition, the laboratory also houses a Field Emission Gun SEM/Focused Ion Beam instrument for SEM imaging, nanofabrication and nanomachining, including preparation of TEM samples using the in-situ TEM lift out technique. The laboratory also has a full range of sample preparation equipment for preparing a wide range of different materials for electron microscope studies.

This laboratory is a multi-user, interdisciplinary facility that is open to students, staff and faculty at the University of New Mexico, as well as to users and scientific collaborators from other institutions. The laboratory has developed through a strong collaboration between the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and the Center for Microengineered Materials (CMEM) at UNM. Access to the instrument is by arrangement with Professor Adrian Brearley (Lab Director) or Dr. Ying-Bing Jiang (Lab Manager) or Dr. Elena Dobrica (Research scientist). For users who are interested in being trained to use the instrument themselves, we offer a 500 level graduate class (EPS 564 -Analytical Electron Microscopy) every Spring semester.

The laboratory is funded by a combination of support from the State of New Mexico, through UNM, NSF, NASA user fees and support from the Office of the Vice-President for Research (UNM).
